Understanding Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves unnaturally to the left or right. Symptoms include the unnatural curvature of the spine, uneven shoulders, hips being tilted to one side and an uneven waistline.

Scoliosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including leg length discrepancy. | Family Podiatry Centre | Best Foot Doctor Podiatrist DPM Clinic Singapore Malaysia

What causes Scoliosis?

Many cases of scoliosis are idiopathic, which means that there is no known cause. However, there are some factors which can contribute to the development of scoliosis.

Scoliosis in children is most commonly triggered during a growth spurt, typically between the ages of 9 to 15 years old as the child goes through puberty. Additionally, girls seem to have a higher likelihood of getting scoliosis than boys, and often have a more severe curvature.

Best Scoliosis Treatment

If left untreated, scoliosis can cause lower back pain, early arthritis, problems with posture and an asymmetrical gait. Treatment for scoliosis will vary depending on its cause – for instance, if it was caused by a leg length discrepancy, the child may be prescribed an orthotic to compensate for the difference.

In any case, they will have to be examined to figure out what caused the scoliosis before treatment. If your child is suffering from scoliosis, we highly recommend visiting a podiatrist for solutions to help treat it. Even if the scoliosis is not caused by a lower limb condition, a podiatrist can help to provide ways to manage the condition, such as orthotics which can help to even out an irregular posture or physiotherapy.
