Understanding Knock Knees

Like bow legs, knock knees are a common condition seen in children with their soft, developing bones.

Knock knees are a visible gap between the feet and ankles when standing with the knees together. It is a normal part of early childhood development and is commonly seen in young children, especially between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. The knees straighten out over time as the child grows, usually becoming completely straight by the time they are 8 years old.

Knock knees are common in young children, as their bones are still developing. | Family Podiatry Centre | Best Foot Doctor Podiatrist DPM Clinic Singapore Malaysia

What causes Knock Knees?

  • Knock knees are common in growing children because their legs are still developing, and they will tend towards intoe-ing, knock knees or having bow legs.
  • Knock knees may also be an indicator of an underlying condition such as rickets, which is a Vitamin D deficiency.

Best Knock Knees Treatment

Usually, no intervention is required to treat knock knees as they are corrected naturally over time. If knock knees occur in older children (around the age of 8) or teenagers, they may be suffering from a more serious condition such as leg length discrepancy

Severe cases where pain is caused by the knock knees, or the child is limping, may also require further intervention. In such cases, do not hesitate to book a consultation with us to see what should be done for your child’s situation.
