Understanding Bunions | Juvenile Hallux Valgus

Bunions can occur during childhood as well and are called juvenile hallux valgus. The hallux (big toe) turns inwards to face the second toe, and a bony bump forms over the joint of the first toe.

Symptoms of bunions include:

  • A bump at the base of the big toe
  • Redness or swelling
  • Pain around the bunion and when walking
  • Difficulty in finding shoes that fit comfortably

What causes Juvenile Hallux Valgus?

Bunions in children are caused by the same factors as in adults. Namely:

  • Genetics
    • These are the biggest factor to consider with bunions – if you have bunions, it is likely that your children will develop them as well.
  • Ill-fitting shoes, especially ones with a narrow front or toe box
  • Excessive pronation (the inward movement of the feet while walking)
  • A hypermobile toe joint
  • Flat feet

Best Bunions Treatment For Children

If left untreated, the bunion can lead to even more serious problems like a stiffened big toe or arthritis later in life. Fortunately, as children’s feet are still soft and pliable, bunions are more easily addressed early on. We highly recommend seeing a podiatrist to seek treatment for bunions before they worsen.
