Pain located in the ball of the foot, also known as metatarsalgia, is a common condition that occurs when the heads of the long bones in the feet become stressed.

What causes Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia can be caused by a large variety of factors that include:

  • A high-arched foot
  • The anatomy of the bones and their position in the foot
  • Biomechanical problems such as excessive pronation or supination
  • Underlying conditions e.g Morton’s neuroma, arthritis, or Freiberg’s disease.
  • Direct trauma, or side effects of surgery
  • Improper footwear

As there are so many potential causes of metatarsalgia, a thorough examination should be performed to accurately pinpoint which one it is in each case.

Best Metatarsalgia Treatment

If your feet are hurting much more than they should be, you may be suffering from metatarsalgia. We recommend booking a consultation with a podiatrist to further examine your feet, as bone problems can eventually become very difficult to manage and lead to chronic pain. Metatarsalgia can be caused by many factors, so a detailed examination is needed to devise a proper treatment plan.
