Metatarsalgia can be caused by a large variety of factors that include:
- A high-arched foot
- The anatomy of the bones and their position in the foot
- Biomechanical problems such as excessive pronation or supination
- Underlying conditions e.g Morton’s neuroma, arthritis, or Freiberg’s disease.
- Direct trauma, or side effects of surgery
- Improper footwear
As there are so many potential causes of metatarsalgia, a thorough examination should be performed to accurately pinpoint which one it is in each case.
